I wake up to the sound of my phone buzzing with a text message and look around the room. I’m alone but the slight burning feeling between my legs tells me that none of what happened was a dream. I stretch for my phone and groan through the stiffness of my muscles, this is a different feeling than after I workout.

I open the screen and see a text from Jules, making my heart stop in my chest.

Jules: See you tomorrow.

My fingers fly over the screen in a flurry of anxious fear.

Me: You’re coming here? Why?

He doesn’t answer me and I fly off the bed in a panic, does he know what I’ve done? No! I shake my head, hoping to dislodge some sense, and begin to pace. Jules knows nothing, I need to be logical, and lock down the stress threatening to dissolve me into a puddle of terror. I’m not so much afraid of Jules as I am of Julio and I know he pulls all Jules’ strings. So why is he sending his son here?

There’s no way I’m sleeping tonight and I’m now filled with energy that needs to be depleted. I get dressed and throw my hair up in a bun as I’m flying out of my bedroom door. I need to give my father a heads up as well.

I hurry down the corridor and make a right, thankful he’s far enough away that he didn’t hear anything from earlier. Fuck! I can’t think of that right now, I need to prepare for Jules. I bang on my father’s door and he has it opened in less than twenty seconds.

“Mija, what is it?”

“Jules will be here tomorrow.” My words come out rushed and I sound like I can’t get enough air. “I barely got a warning this time, have you heard anything?”

His eyes widen and I know he’s taken by surprise, my trepidation warranted. “No.” He shakes his head brusquely, “nada.”

“Fuck.” I growl and pace the hall outside of his room. “Why so soon?”

“Maybe he has heard about Carmelo Torres taking over the Head Corp?” His fingers snare into the goatee on his chin, “Ember and I have always wondered if we have a rat in our numbers.”

Carmelo? I can feel my skin become damp with fear and the realization that if they have their sights on him, then there’s no dislodging it.

“Papa,” my chest heaves rapidly, “they won’t like that.”

The Cartel was fine with Ember Torres-Greene heading the Head Corp because like I’ve said, misogyny is still prevalent within their ranks, and they believed her to be easily manipulated if the need ever arose. But now, to put a Torres male back into that position, one whose lineage screams psychotic and unbalanced, would mean war.

“I need to call Ember,” the crease between his eyebrows worries me. “She’ll know what to do.”

“Papa, Carmelo… nothing can happen to him.” I know I sound weak and it grates on the teachings that have been forced on me, but I can’t help it.
